Balconies
Preparation first, then the system, then the protective layers. The waterproofing system is only as good as the preparation underneath it.
We prepare the surface, apply the waterproofing system and install any protective layers.
Our recent balcony system is primer, Gripset BRW PFN self-adhesive butyl rubber sheet membrane, then two coats of ACTFLEX 906, a water-based polyurethane membrane that dries electric blue. Balcony walls for direct-stick render get ACTFLEX 989.
We waterproof for Hotondo Homes South Coast builds, and recent jobs include Erowal Bay, Jervis Bay, Vincentia, Berry and Ulladulla.
Marty's method
Six steps, in this order.
Marty's own tips for waterproofing a balcony, step by step.
-
Surface preparation
Clean, sound, dry, and free from dust, contaminants and loose material.
-
Check the falls
Adequate falls to the drainage points. Waterproofing will not fix poor drainage.
-
Prime the surface
The correct primer for the substrate and the system.
-
Reinforce critical areas
Bond breakers and reinforcement fabric to all corners, joints, penetrations and movement areas.
-
First coat
An even, complete coverage.
-
Second coat
Once the first has cured, at the required thickness for compliance.
On the job
